What to Do if Your Car Slides on Ice

Icy roadways are dangerous. To prevent sliding, you should always drive slowly and avoid hitting your brakes as much as possible. Also, make sure your tires have a good amount of tread on them before you drive your car in icy conditions.

Lexus of Warwick wants you to be safe on the road this winter. If your car does start to slide, follow these safety tips:

  • Don't panic. Your immediate reaction will be to hit your brakes hard, but don't.
  • Ease off of the accelerator.
  • Focus your eyes on a far-off point in the direction you are headed.
  • Slightly turn your steering wheel in the direction your back tires are going.
  • Once your vehicle is aligned straight again, take care not to overcorrect.

Reacting by slamming on your brakes or turning your wheel sharply will only make the slide worse, and your car could spin out.
